This weeks entry the the Weekly Theme Art Blog

This week's theme was my choice, So I went for all things Warrior.

For those young 'uns who haven't heard of Warrior, it was possibly the 2nd best (after 2000ad) British anthology going in the 80's. Stories included, Marvelman (then Mircleman, now back to Marvelman!) V for Vendetta and one of my favourites, Alex Pressbutton. Pressbutton was written by Steve Moore and featured legenary artists such as Garry Leach, Alan Davis and Steve Dillon.

(From Wikipedia) Pressbutton originally a mild-mannered and plant-loving florist, he took delivery of plant matter which included a sentient, telepathic, anesthetic, carnivorous fungus which attacked his body from the feet upwards All the time it was consuming him, it was empathising with him, apologising for eating him and preventing him from feeling the pain. (Bhuna....I shit you not!)

By the time he was rescued, the only remaining parts of his body were his head, right arm and part of his chest. As a result of this damage, he became extremely embittered, especially against vegetation. When rebuilt as Pressbutton, he was fitted with a cleaver as a left arm and, because of his lack of genital equipment, an orgasm-inducing button on his chest clearly marked "Press". Unfortunately, this was sometimes used by later adversaries to disable him (in rapture) while he was attacking them.

Speed Date 2... Coming Soon

I know it's a complete rip off or homage (take your pick) of the fantastic Bill Sienkiewicz's cover of Elektra Assassin #4. But here is a little promo piece I've done for Speed Date 2 - Cruz Control' is going to be featured in this years Hallowscream.

Dirk Van Dom who wrote this sick little tale has quoted on his blog...

'I revisit the character and present a 'what happened next' type epilogue to the tale...a full colour (and what colour!) tale of love and romance that is now in the can, courtesy of the wonderful Bhuna (that's me, that is!), and being lettered as we speak. Speed Date 2:Cruz Control is, like all good sequels, everything the first part had but MORE. MORE violence, MORE blood, MORE death, MORE twists. It is, honestly, the bloodiest 6 pages of comic I have ever witnessed. They don't come much more blood-soaked than this people, so keep an eye out for this year's Hallowscream at the end of the month to find out if Tucker gets his come-uppance or not.'

I think he liked my work!!

Hallowscream 2011 will be available for download on 31st October!

Tucker's next tale is going to be featured in issue 2 of Vanguard which again will be written by Dirk with art my m'very good self.

Anyway, the first part of the story which appeared in last years edition (with art by Ghostpockets) has been made into a short film called SPEED KILLS as Speed Date already exists.

The big news though is that the movie has been picked to appear as part of the short film showcase at this year's Horrorthon festival in the IFI in Dublin. It's being shown on October the 31st at 11am.

Here's a still for the film!

Anyone fancy a bit of Speed Dating??

Last year a small press publication called Hallowscream featured a story called Speed Date which was written by the very talented Dirk Van Dom and illustrated by the enigmatic Ghostpockets.

Now Ghostpockets style is very unique. I can see a little bit of a Mike McMahon influence in his work, (after Mr McMahon mutated his style again) which isn't a bad thing.

Anyway, due to other commitments Ghostpockets wasn't available to illustrate the second part of Speed Date - Speed Date 2 - Cruz Control (cool title or what!)  So after the work that I had produced for Dr WTF, Dirk asked me if I would like to take over the mantle of drawing the final episode of the story. After reading the script how could it refuse!! Expect, blood, snot and a hot bad-ass chick!

Below is the first page of the second episode. I'm wanting to keep the continuity going buy using Ghostpockets colours, but try and make it a bit more grittier as the story does become quite dark.

And below is the final page of the first episode.

And finally (because I'm waffling) is the initial concept sketch of the main character 'Tucker'

Horrible Histories.... Frightful Futures

For this months 2000ad Forum competiton

The Brief: A Children's book adaptation of 2000 ad.

"Choose a well known children's book and adapt it to a 2000ad story or character. You could draw the artwork in the style of a certain children's book or pick a scene in a children's book and change it to suit the 2000 ad universe. Anything goes... the sky's the limit."
I wish history was taught like this when I was at school. And probably the funnies program on TV... Horrible Histories.

So I give you not just a single book, but a whole frickin series.... Frightful Futures!! I could have gone on and on with Dastardly Droids, Galactic Gladiators, Barmy Berserkers , etc etc.

Exterminate, Exterminate... ermm no you won't!

Some more concept work for the Cosmic Excrement Dr WTF!? story.

Even as a kid, Daleks never really scared me. The just seems like a large upturned bin with a sink plunger sticking out of it. Obviously, with Davros being the star villain in the story, we had to have Daleks or Dalexxx at Matt has called them.

We decided that there would be two types, your bog standard Dalexxx and the Sado- Surgeons. I had a lot of fun with these. The tentacles were to give them a bit of a HP Lovecraft feel. I thought it would be cool (in a sick sort of way) if the Sado-Surgeons actually had their surgical instruments grafted to them by Darvos.

Dr WTF!? - The Who and the Villian of this piece

Now that the story is going to print very soon, I thought I'd show some of the original concepts that I did for 'The Who' and the main character of the vile little tale... Davros

The Who.

Over the last few years there has been a few changes to who has played the Doctor. Whilst playing around with a few ideas, I though 'why is the 'Doctor' always white?' Why not Chinese, an Aborigines or a black Rastafarian! I like the idea that the Doctor is always quite eccentric in the most English of ways. I wanted to keep that element in the character.. This is where the initial 'By Jove, What What!' phrase came from. Matt has done a cracking job with the script, building the above element into the dialog. And why the blue eyes??? You'll just have to buy a copy and find out!

Davros

Whilst Matt was polishing the script it came quick obvious that our is a blatantly homosexual with distinct homoerotic undercurrent. It's a love story..... honest!

Why not join the Dr WTF!? facebook page to see some teasers of other tales are to be told?

Dr Who WFT?! Teaser

Owen who is putting the Dr WFT?! anthology together has asked the contributors for a few teaser images. It's been doing the rounds on Facebook, but what the hell!
